A 3-year-old boy has died after he fell into a grease trap behind a Tim Hortons coffee shop in Rochester.

According to investigator Frank Camp with the Rochester Police Department and WHAM, the boy's mother called police just before 11 a.m. Monday morning when she couldn't find him. A bystander found the boy in the trap, pulled him out and tried to revive him, but he later died at Strong Memorial Hospital.

I don't know how long he was in there, but we do know that it was almost instantaneous: When the mother found the child missing, they called the police right away, and several minutes later he was discovered in the grease trap.

According to WHAM, Camp said in a media briefing that it seems like the boy climbed on top of the trap and the lid, which was unsecured, gave way.

Camp appeared very emotional as he closed the briefing.

We're asked all the time, 'What's the worst thing that you encounter as a police officer?' and this is number one.... It's tough on our officers, but our hearts are really going out to the family for this. This is just a horrible, horrible, unimaginable, unspeakable tragedy.

Police are still investigating the details of the incident.
