Lt. Steve Hauck, Public Information Officer for the Utica Police Department, says there were 72 sexually related crimes reported in Utica from September 2014-September 2015. There's now some new ways to protect yourself, your children and the elderly.

Parents worry about their children's safety especially when they are out alone. Walking home from school or college, getting out of work after dark, these situations could be dangerous for them.

Jeff Rossen reports alarming new research showing nearly 70% of teenagers ages 14-17 have been assaulted and in college nearly 1 in 4 women experienced unwanted sexual contact.

There are 3 smartphone apps that our children need. All 3 are free downloads from the app store. This technology actually helps you protect your children even when you're in a different location.

Companion

Companion can send a message to anyone anywhere, showing them your child's exact location. The app uses the phone's motion sensors to send an alert if the user starts running, drops the phone, or has his or her headphones yanked out. There website says:

Companion lets you reach out to family, friends, or your public safety department to have them keep an eye on you as you travel late at night. Add friends or family to be your Companion. They don't even need the app installed to watch your back! If you set off a Smart Trigger, they’ll check in to make sure you’re safe. If you don't respond, they'll alert your Companions.

Circle of 6

Circle of 6 goes even further, beaming the location of the phone's user to six people at a time if the user is in trouble. According to the website:

With Circle of 6, you can connect with your friends to stay close, stay safe and prevent violence before it happens.
The Circle of 6 app for iPhone and Android makes  it quick and easy to reach the 6 friends you choose.
Need help getting home? Need an interruption? Two touches lets your circle know where you are and how they can help.
Icons represent actions; so that no one can tell what you’re up to.
Designed for college students, it’s fast, easy-to-use and private.
It’s the mobile way to look out for your friends, on campus or when you’re out for the night.

LifeLine Response

LifeLine Response not only tracks a phone user but will even call the police instantly if the user's thumb is removed from the screen. There website says:

Need hands free protection (on a date, jogging, hands-full)?
Set the app to Timer Mode and check in when you’re safely home.
Attacker notices the app and forces you to disarm?
Secret Alarm Code gets you help covertly.
Phone broken during an attack?
The LifeLine System will send out the alert the moment your connection is dropped.
They call it Comprehensive Protection. You can just call it Unbeatable Peace of Mind.
