Spring Turkey season is just weeks away, and the Department of Environmental Conservation suggests preparing now. Especially if you are a first-time hunter and need to obtain a New York hunting license.

Spring Turkey season runs May 1 thru May 31. Obviously, you need a hunting license, but 1st you need to pass a Hunter Education Course. And therein lies the rub, finding an open course. They're free but class sizes are limited and fill up fast. For instance, over the next week, there are 6 classes, but only 8 open seats.

If you plan to hunt this season, it would be wise to try and book a class now, here's a list of all classes including the number of open seats. Registration can be done at the website and there are some advance homework and forms to be completed in advance of classes. For youth hunters, anyone under 16 must provide a parental permission slip.

Youth Turkey Hunts for 12 through 15-year-olds are April 20 and 21. Get more info on Turkey season at the DEC's website.
