Two Tornadoes Confirmed in New York

Two more tornadoes have struck New York this season.

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF1 touched down in Otsego and Lewis County on Monday, June 30.

Lewis County Tornado Near Croghan

First up was a fast-moving EF1 tornado in Lewis County.

This one touched down around 2:00 PM just west of Croghan and was gone by 2:01 PM — lasting barely a minute, but still doing damage along a short 0.63-mile path.

Winds were estimated up to 100 mph, with a maximum width of about 150 yards. Thankfully, there were no injuries or fatalities.

Survey crews with the National Weather Service in Buffalo found a narrow but intense damage path along Swiss Road between Castorland and Croghan. Most of the damage was to trees, but in some spots it was severe, with power poles and lines taken down as well.

Otsego County tornado — longer track, stronger impact

Later in the day, another EF1 tornado was confirmed in Otsego County.

This one was much longer-lived, touching down near Pittsfield at 4:34 PM and tracking for more than 8 miles before lifting near Morris at 4:52 PM.

It packed estimated winds up to 105 mph, with a damage path up to 300 yards wide. Again, the good news is that there were no injuries or fatalities reported.

Survey teams found a mix of scattered and concentrated tree damage, with a more defined corridor near County Highway 49.

Residents along the path described intense conditions, including sudden pressure drops, loud wind bursts, and trees coming down in a focused line. The storm appeared to strengthen and weaken along its path before eventually dissipating near a lake.
