If you're trying to beat the heat, you won't be cooling off at Verona Beach State Park where swimming is banned due to toxic blue-green algae according to the New York State Parks Department. The Splash Pad is still open to cool down though.

"The beach at Verona Beach State Park is closed. Please contact the park office for more information and additional updates. The spray park remains open."

The blue green algae can make you sick and even kill your dogs. Avoid going into the water until it clears. Get up to date information on water quality before heading to the beach at the NYS Park Department.

Luckily there are several other lakes, streams, ponds and rivers you can cool off in and around central New York during the recent heat wave. Or you can DYI water park with Redneck water skiing....
