We've known for a long time that Utica is truly the melting pot of Central New York. Almost 1 in 5 residents in Utica, were born in another country. That means more than 11,000 residents of the Mohawk Valley city are immigrants, according to a recent report.

18.2 percent of Utica's population was born outside of the United States. Isn't that crazy to think? That's also amazing and shows how our area welcomes many of these amazing people.

Utica, a city of about 62,000 about an hour east of Syracuse, has a long tradition of accepting immigrants and refugees. In 35 years, the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees has helped about 16,000 refugees resettle in the United States. The center helps newly arrived refugees find a place to live, enroll in school, find a job and navigate through new customs and rules in a new country. "

Utica is not alone, according to this report many upstate cities are the host of many immigrant population:

Schenectady, 13.3 percent

Syracuse, 11.8 percent

Albany, 11.2 percent

Rochester, 9.1 percent

Buffalo, 8.6 percent

The report also found that here in the Mohawk Valley, Europeans make up the largest share of immigrants at 40 percent. Nearly two-thirds of them from Eastern Europe, predominantly Bosnia and Herzegovina.
