If texting were an Olympic sport 17 year old Austin Wierschke of Rhinelander, Wisconsin would be wearing a gold medal around his neck. Instead, he is carrying a $50,000 check to the bank as winner of the sixth annual U.S. LG National Texting Competition held Wednesday in Times Square. According to the AP the competition was judged on "speed, accuracy and dexterity - on four different challenges.". Austin, who also won the competition last year, was well prepared for the challenge.

Texting To Blame For Students Poor Grammar

It's probably no surprise to those of us of a certain age but a new study shows that texting is having a negative effect on our kids grammar. A recent study of 6th through 8th graders reported by Good.is found that "The more texts the 10-to-14-year-olds sent, the worse their grammar performance." The question then becomes, OMG, are we doomed to have future generations who don't know a comma from a coma or a ":"from a ";" ?

Texting While Walking Banned In New Jersey [VIDEO]

It's one thing to be pulled over for texting while driving but now one New Jersey city, Fort Lee, has banned texting while walking. According to ABC News police are giving out tickets to people they catch texting while walking the city's streets and those tickets carry an $85 fine. Fort Lee police chief Thomas Ripoli says there is good reasoning behind the ban.

It's pretty much understood that texting while driving is not a good idea. As a matter of fact it's a pretty dumb thing to do. Many states including New York have banned the practice and now, according to Reuters, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is calling for a federal law to ban talking on a cell phone or texting while driving any type of vehicle on any road in the country.

We have long been aware of the danger texting while driving poses. Now we are becoming equally aware of the pitfalls of texting while walking. The most recent case of text-walking ending badly came this week when an Indiana women, Bonnie Miller, fell into a river connecting to Lake Michigan while walking along a pier. According to ABC News57 in South Bend the woman was rescued by her husband an an on-looker. Hurt? No. Embarrassed?

Yes, it's National Cellphone Courtesy Month (click the link to read more about it) and that means people should be more self-aware of their cellphone usage, right?
