Growing up in the '60s, I was always fascinated by the space race and the NASA missions to the moon. On this day in 1972, the U.S.A's last manned launch to the moon took place with Apollo XVII, and we haven't set foot there since.
Move over Super Bowl, here comes a celestial show that will even overshadow you. It's being called the "Supermoon" or super perigee moon. According to CBS News the moon will reach perigee or its closest point to earth around 11:30 tonight. What does this mean to we stargazers?
I've always been a bit spaced out, so to speak, with a keen interest in space exploration. I am old enough to remember that first lunar landing in 1969 by Apollo 11, and we have landed on the moon several more times. Now, new photos have been released showing remnants of those landings - everything from lunar rover tracks to items left behind.
I am into the stars, planets and cosmos big time! Tonight, we on earth (that includes all of us) will experience a total lunar eclipse. Unfortunately, it won't be visible to us in central New York, or even North America.
