I remember sitting in my office watching the coverage a few minutes before lift off. They were showing icicles hanging off the shuttle and it's rockets and honestly, I thought how can equipment go from freezing cold to hundreds or thousands of degrees and still work. The investigation showed that indeed the temperature fluctuation played a part in the failure of an O-Ring that led to the explosion.
