Residents in Schuyler are being warned of men posing as town employees to burglarize homes.

New York State Police are investigating a burglary on Mapleton Drive in Schuyler where a man knocked on the door, telling the elderly resident he worked for the town and needed to check the water pressure for the sewer system. When he was let in he asked to go downstairs to the washing machine and asked the homeowner to run a wash cycle.

State Police say while the homeowner and man were downstairs, a second person entered the home and stole items from an upstairs bedroom.

Investigators believe the burglars were driving a tan colored van and the man who knocked on the door spoke broken English and may have been of Spanish descent.

State Police are reminding residents to make sure you know who you are dealing with before opening your door to strangers. .

Call the companies local office to verify ID
Don’t allow the person inside your home
Don’t go outside the house with the person
Call 911 to report a suspicious person
