Lee Brice, ‘Hard to Love’ – Song Review

Hard to Love
Curb Nashville

The title track to Lee Brice‘s ‘Hard 2 Love’ album is of the same mood as the chart-topping lead single ‘Woman Like You.’ ‘Hard to Love’ protects none of the vulnerabilities and insecurities a man has in showing his lover how he feels.

The mid-tempo cut isn’t a “this is who I am, but oh yeah I’m sorry or whatever” type of song, like so many country apology notes that are sung with a wink. Brice seems genuinely torn up by what he’s put his woman through.

I am insensitive / I have a tendency / To pay more attention to the things that I need / Sometimes I drink too much / Sometimes I test your trust / Sometimes I don’t know why you’re staying with me,” he sings to begin the song. This track kicks off his album and sets the mood for the next hour or so worth of music.

I’m hard to love, hard to love / I don’t make it easy / I couldn’t do it if I stood where you stood / I’m hard to love, hard to love / You say that you need me / I don’t deserve it but I love that you love me,” he adds during the catchy chorus.

Lyrically, the song doesn’t come to life as easily as some others Brice has performed or written (Billy Montana leads the trio of songwriters responsible for this song). It’s somewhat two-dimensional, relying on emotion and a great hook — and not so much vivid detail. Still, Brice should have no trouble finding his way up the charts with ‘Hard to Love,’ a song that is already making a dent on the iTunes digital sales charts.
