Eric Lawson for three years in the late 1970s and early 1980s was known as the Marlboro Man. This month, Lawson died of smoking related causes. In 2006 Lawson was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Starting in the early 1990s, Lawson came out against smoking including participating in PSAs for the American Cancer Society. He was still smoking when he was diagnosed in 2006.

Eric Lawson is the third actor to portray the Marlboro man who has passed away from smoking related illness.

By the time Lawson had got the job of Marlboro man, television commercials for cigarettes were banned so most of his advertisements were in print and billboard form
