This week's New York State American Legion Baseball Tournament is more than ball and strikes.

Kids from each team actually meet and talk with area veterans, 'as a reminder of the sacrifices our veterans have made for all of us,' tournament director Mike Macchione recently told me. And, the games - and some local volunteers from Bank of New York Mellon - will again support area veterans.

It's comes through BNY Mellon's unique approach to supporting local communities.

Employees get two paid days each year in which they can use to volunteer for a local cause. Several used their days at the state legion tournament at Murnane Field in Utica. While the workers receive a day's pay, BNY Mellon doubles the amount of the employee's daily wage, and donates the money to the cause that worker is supporting.

This year, that totaled more than $6,000, Macchione said. He accepted the check and it will in turn be donated to Sitrin's Military Rehabilitation program:

Frank Behlmer, BNY Mellon's COO of Global Operations, threw out the first pitch before final game of Thursday's pool play action.
