B.B. Cunningham, one-time bassist for country rocker Jerry Lee Lewis, was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee on Sunday (Oct. 14).

The 70-year-old, who also worked as a security guard at an apartment complex, heard gunshots near the neighboring Cherry Crest apartments and went to investigate, according to the New York Daily News. Both Cunningham and a 16-year-old boy were later found dead.

In his music career, Cunningham also worked with Elton John and Lou Rawls. He had been a member of Lewis’ band since 1997. “He and I played bass,” says fellow Memphis musician Richard Cushing. “He on occasion would show up at our gigs and was very generous and very kind and would always come talk to me because we’re both bass players.”

Jerry Lee Lewis made a foray into country music with his 1968 single, ‘Another Time, Another Place.’  The same year, Lewis notched a No. 1 single, ‘To Make Love Sweeter for You.’

No suspect has been named in Cunningham’s untimely death.
