For the first time in 70 years, an Amtrak daily route is offering service between Burlington and New York City.

In most of the Northeast, rail service is pretty robust versus other parts of the United States and you can travel between most of our big cities by rail. But there are some holes in the service.

For example, it seems odd you cannot take a train from Albany to Boston - though there is some buzz around this becoming a reality in the future.

Another missed rail connection over the last several decades was rail service connecting New York City and the Capital Region with Burlington, Vermont - but now that connection is re-established and once again up and running.

According to a WCAX report, the Ethan Allen Express expanded service back to Burlington's Union Station. in late July. The daily service connects Burlington to New York City, and includes stops in the Capital Region in Albany and Saratoga Springs.

WCAX says this is the first time in 70 years that rail service has extended beyond Rutland to connect Burlington and New York City. The service also makes stops now in Middlebury and Vergennes, Vermont and offers one departure to New York City and vice versa every day.
