A Syracuse woman has died after a canoe accident on the St. Lawrence River.

28-year-old Cookie Brown, of Syracuse, New York fell into the St. Lawrence River and drowned when her canoe capsized on July 15th at around 9 a.m. It happened off Indian Point Road in the town of Hammond.

New York State Police say Brown was not wearing a life-jacket. Her body was recovered by the State Police Underwater Recovery Team.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Another person in the canoe managed to make it safely back to shore.

The U.S. Coast Guard encourages everyone to wear a lifejacket when on the water. "It's tempting to boat without wearing a lifejacket especially on nice days, but most boating related drownings happen on nice days."

A wearable lifejacket can save your life, but only when you wear it.
