Some CNY Schools Starting Before Labor Day This Year

For many families, Labor Day weekend means one last summer getaway, one more trip to the beach, and one final chance to sleep in before school starts.

This year, some students will be heading back to class before the holiday.

Madison-Oneida BOCES component districts will begin the school year before the Labor Day holiday on September 7. Those districts include:

• Camden
• Canastota
• Hamilton
• Madison
• Rome
• Stockbridge Valley
• Vernon-Verona-Sherrill

Although Oneida City Schools is in the BOCES district, classes will start on September 8.

Other school districts starting before Labor Day are New Hartford, Oriskany, Utica, New York Mills, Whitesboro, Clinton, Waterville, Yorkville, Sauquoit and South Lewis, along with several Syracuse area Schools.

It Comes Down To Building The School Calendar

School starting before Labor Day isn’t something districts do every year.

The calendar has to balance a lot of moving parts, including New York State requirements for instructional days and hours, holidays, school breaks, professional development days, state testing, Regents exams, transportation and shared BOCES programs.

Districts work together through Madison-Oneida BOCES to create a regional calendar that meets those requirements while supporting students, families and staff.

Why Not Just Start After Labor Day?

Officials say waiting until after Labor Day isn’t always possible while still creating a balanced school year.

Starting earlier helps make sure students get the required classroom time without pushing the end of the school year too far into the summer.
