A Norwich school bus driver is being hailed a hero for her quick reaction that saved a student's life from an illegally passing car.

A video released on the Norwich City School District Facebook page shows the bus driver, Samantha Call, grabbing the student's shirt to stop him from stepping in front of a car that passed on the wrong side when the red lights were flashing.

The incident happened on Friday, April 26th, 2019 at 10:44 a.m and shows why you should NEVER pass a stopped school bus when the arm is out and the red lights are flashing. Call prevented an almost-certain tragedy said NCSD Transportation Supervisor William Loomis.

Samantha did an outstanding job. All of our drivers undergo continuous training so they're prepared to handle situations like this. We hope this video helps everyone to realize the dangers of passing a stopped school bus.

The New York State Legislature has passed a bill to put cameras on school bus stop sign arms. Supporters of the legislation say it will save lives because drivers will be more hesitant to pass stopped school buses if they know they're being recorded. Governor Cuomo plans to sign the bill into law.
