New York offering grant money for volunteer fire departments. While the New York DEC is handling the application process, "Volunteer Fire Assistance" grants come from the U.S. Forest Service. They'll match up to $1500 for the purchase of new equipment. Heres what it can and can't be used for and how to apply.

The grants cover equipment directly related to fire suppression. Including:

  • portable pumps
  • portable backpack pumps
  • hand tools
  • hoses
  • light-weight fireproof clothing (Nomex)
  • hard hats
  • turnout gear
  • portable radios
  • generators
  • dry hydrants.

Not covered will be items associated with search and rescue, acquisition of land, construction of buildings and facilities, major apparatus purchases and maintenance items.

Another stipulation to the grants, the Fire Department must serve a community with 10, 000 or fewer people. If awarded, fire departments receive 50/50 matching funds up to $1,500.The deadline for applications is August 10. Last year the program provided 319 departments with the grants.
