Mall of America Closed on Thanksgiving – Should CNY Stores Follow Suit?
The Mall of America in Minnesota has announced they will be closed on Thanksgiving this year. Should stores and businesses in Central New York follow their lead and save holiday shopping for Black Friday and after?
It may have been shocking news to some, especially in a time when holiday shopping begins earlier and earlier every year, but the Mall of America announced they would not be open on Thanksgiving. This will give their employees the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their family, instead of dealing with crazy shoppers looking for the best holiday deals.
Now there is a catch to this announcement, however. According to CNN Money,
...some stores could choose to open. The mall is leaving it up to its 500-plus store owners on whether they want to open their doors to bargain-seeking shoppers on the holiday.
So that means the mall's general employees, movie theater attendants, and workers at their amusement park will have the day off, but it's up to store owners within the mall to decide for themselves if they want to be open on Thanksgiving or not.
Either way, this is big news for the holiday shopping craze. If half the stores decide to close for Thanksgiving, more people may consider waiting until Black Friday to shop when all the stores are back open. This could start a whole new trend for places all over the country - Holiday shopping could start later in the years to come.
