Here in New York state, a new proposed law called the "Community Heroes Protection Act" is up for a vote. This law would increase penalties for those who commit crimes against any emergency service worker.

According to Akshar's office, the Community Heroes Protection Act was inspired by the many brave men and women in uniform who have lost their lives, were injured or targeted simply because of their jobs as protectors of the community.  WBNG reports that this law would designate crimes against first responders (police, firefighters, EMS workers) as hate crimes if the crimes are shown to be motivated by the victims' profession.

Researchers have found that between 2015 and 2016, there was a 68% increase in firearms related fatalities among law enforcement. This brings the total number of officers who were fatally shot in 2016 to sixty-four, according to Akshar's office."

According to ABC News 10, the bill is currently bipartisan and if passed, it would be one of the first of its kind in the nation.
