UPDATE: All lanes of Interstate 81 between Tully and LaFayette are now back open after they were closed most of Monday morning.

I-81 is closed in both directions after three people were sent to the hospital from a chemical exposure.

Two New York state troopers and a driver were sent to Upstate University Hospital, according to Spectrum News after police found an unconscious man inside a vehicle on the highway. Police had to break the window to get inside, where they discovered an unknown chemical.

9 miles of I-81 is closed in both directions from Exit 14 in Tully to Exit 15 in Lafayette as a precaution. Police don't expect it to reopen until 10 this morning.

The State Police Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team is investigating.
