Each Tuesday we’re putting the spotlight on a local community and today we’re heading to Illion in Herkimer County, home to a major nationwide company and a MLB baseball player.

Remington Arms
The community began to flourish around 1816 when Eliphalet Remington created his first gun, which would later grow into the Remington Arms company. Remington Arms the oldest company in the United States which still makes its original product, and is the oldest continuously operating manufacturer in North America.

Remington Arms Gun Museum
The museum located in Ilion, has one of the foremost collection of Remington guns to be found. The Remington guns have been made only at this site.

Village Name
In 1843 a name for the settlement needed to be chosen. Remington rejected the use of his name, and it was eventually called Ilion. A popular, yet unverified rumor is the application said Illium, but due to a misspelling or bad penmanship was interpreted as Ilion.

Schools
The Ilion Central School District has three buildings: Remington Elementary with the Roadrunners sport teams, Barringer Road Elementary with the Bobcats and Ilion Jr/Sr High School. Their sport team's nickname is the Golden Bombers, the mascot is the Bomber Bear.  The school colors are gold and brown.

Ilion Veterans' Memorial Auditorium
The Ilion Veterans' Memorial Auditorium was remodeled and upgraded in 2003. The names represents all of the men and women who served in harms way, to provide the Freedom that we all enjoy today. From veterans from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Global War on Terrorism and Peace Time campaigns.

Music on Main Street
Throughout the summer music can be heard at London Towers Gazebo from 7-9 PM.  Bring a lawn chair.

Ilion Civic Band

Throughout the months of June, July and August the Ilion Civic Band also provides free concerts for the public at various locations.  Get a schedule of these concerts HERE.

Ilion Days Celebration
Ilion Days, home of the former frog jumping contest with Jeremiah B Frog, will be held from July 14-22nd.  The theme this year is 'Home Grown.'  A community wide garage sale, parade, craft fair, 5k race, mutt show and princess pageant are planned.  Get a schedule of events HERE.

Ilion Fields
Many volunteers came together to refurbish the David Whalen Community Park in 2007 in the memory of David Whale,n long time caretaker for the park. The Village Board named the former Community Park in his memory. It is currently used for various activities, including leagues, school use and recreational program use.

Lion Marina and RV Park
The Lion Marina and RV Park is considered one of the finest and best kept parks along the NYS Canal System.  Take a panoramic view of the park in the video.

Boots Day
Charles Frederick "Boots" Day was a Major League baseball player from 1969-1974.  He played for St. Louis, Chicago Cubs and Montreal Expos.  Boots was born in Ilion in 1947
