Saying that the procedure is inhumane, groups are again trying to make it against the law to declaw cats in New York State.

Legislation has been introduced in the Senate and the Assembly to make declawing illegal.

Supporters of banning the declawing include the Humane Society and many veterinarians in the state. The dailynews.com reports that the declawing involves the amputation of part of a cat's toes.

However, the largest veterinary association in the state does not support the ban. They say cats who have been declawed lose many abilities to climb and even defend themselves should it ever become necessary.
