Governor Encouraging People ‘Around the World’ to Attend the New York State Fair Now at 100% Capacity

The New York State Fair is back for 2021 and it'll be at 100% capacity.

Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Syracuse, New York to announce the capacity change as well as the reopening of many popular buildings and additional vendors this year. Indoor spaces will be subject to capacity limits to allow for social distancing in each building.

"The State Fair is New York's signature end-of-summer fest, and thanks to our ongoing efforts to follow safety guidelines and get more people vaccinated, the 2021 New York State Fair will be even bigger and better," Governor Cuomo said. "This is a testament to our remarkable progress against COVID, making it possible for thousands more visitors from across the country and all over the world to enjoy the Fair's unique attractions and experience the best of what New York has to offer. I encourage everyone to make the trip to Central New York this summer and support our New York vendors as we continue to reopen our economy and bring back beloved big events across the state."

Is it really a good idea to encourage people from "across the country and all over the world," to come to New York state? Especially if they don't have to be vaccinated or show proof of a negative COVID-19 test. Isn't that just asking for trouble and the possibility of a rise in coronavirus cases?

In April, it was announced the fair would return for 2021 but only at 50% capacity. Since then, the Governor says the public health condition has dramatically improved with more New Yorkers vaccinated and far fewer new COVID-19 cases. But what about people from other states the Governor is now encouraging to come to New York?

The Fair will run for 18 days from August 20 to September 6, the longest for the annual event, and the admission price is lower than it has been in years at $3, with children under 12 getting in free.

Everyone will be required to follow COVID-19 health guidance from the Department of Health that is in effect at the time of the event. Further details on Fair ticket sales and on specific rules for guests will be announced by mid-July and are subject to change with the State's health guidance.
