Free NY State Tuition Program in Jeopardy
There is another program in jeopardy for New York State college students. This one is for New Yorkers who are able to attend state colleges tuition-free.
According to newyorkupstate.com, the program that has been sending New York state residents to state colleges and universities for free may not be available because of the lack of relief money from the federal government due to the coronavirus pandemic.
You can still apply for the Excelsior Scholarship program, but it seems as if many more New Yorkers are being denied. State government officials are pointing fingers on the federal aid needed to run this program. They are claiming the federal government assistance is considerably less because of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
While nothing has been decided yet and you can apply for the fall awards soon, the amount of help for the program may not be available. The process has already been delayed. The application process for the fall is usually open by now.<
According to the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) website:
“Please note that the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically reduced state revenues and the processing of new applications is pending on federal assistance, which has been delayed since April. Excelsior Scholarship awards may have to be reduced and/or prioritized for current recipients as provided for under the program.”
There is no set date when the application process will open for the fall semester.
