The Governor of New York has a plan to give free tuition for state college students whose families make less than $125,000 per year.

Cuomo calls the plan "Excelsior Scholarship", and said it would be paid for by the state's Tuition Assistance Program. It needs legislative approval, and The Times Union reports it would be for students who attend SUNY and CUNY.

About 940,000 students would qualify for the free tuition.  The current SUNY tuition for in-state students is $6,470.

While making the announcement, Andrew Cuomo was joined onstage by Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.  Sanders' recent campaign for President included a plan for free tuition.
