Driving through a snow storm is nothing new for Central New Yorkers. It happens every winter. However, drivers seem to forget how to drive safely from one winter to the next.

It seems like common sense, but here's a few reminders to avoid dangerous driving on snow covered roads.

Brakes

Don't slam on the brakes. You're only going to slide, possibly into the car in front of you. Pump brakes gently ahead of time to stop without sliding.

Gas

Don't jam on the gas at a stop light or stop sign. You're tires will only spin. Gently give the car gas.

Snow Covered Cars

Clear the snow from your car, the whole car. Don't just clear your windshield. Snow from the roof flies off and blinds the driver behind you. If ice is mixed with the snow, it can cause major problems. Don't forget to clean off your headlights and taillights too.

Extra Space

Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you to avoid accidents. Roads are slippery when snow covered and it takes longer to stop.

Headlights

Turn on your headlights, even during the day. Just because you can see doesn't mean others can see you.

Snow Plows

Be courteous to the plows working tirelessly to keep roads as clear as possible.

Keep these driving tips in mind. It's only January and winter is here for a few more months, at least.
