A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook southern Ontario this morning (May 17) and was felt throughout northern and central New York.

The moderately strong quake was centered on the Ontario/Quebec border north of Ottawa approximately 9:43 am.

Update 10:53am The original quake, now at 5.1 was followed by a 4.2 aftershock.

10:42am The USGS is reporting the magnitude as a 5.0 and the epicenter was near Shawville, Quebec.
