A hiking enthusiast is proposing to create a Great Lakes Trail, a single path around the shorelines of all five Great Lakes. If completed, it would be the longest marked trail in the world.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Great Lakes Trail,

would span at least eight states and two Canadian provinces, and would be the longest continuous marked trail in the world — five times larger than the 2,180-mile Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia, and more than four times bigger than the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail from the U.S. border with Canada to its border with Mexico.

In New York, the trail will likely parallel Route 5 from Ripley to Buffalo along Lake Erie, then pass through Niagara Falls and along Route 18, the Lake Ontario State Parkway to Rochester, Ridge Road to the Oswego area then Route 3 along Lake Ontario.
