New York State officials are now asking hunters to help protect New York's deer herd from chronic wasting disease. The disease is on the rise this year.

According to CNY Central, the disease is highly contagious and a fatal disease. What it does is attacks the brain of the infected animal, and eventually leads to death.

State conservation officials are asking hunters to report any deer acting abnormally and to hunt only wild deer. People returning to New York after a hunt are asked to debone or quarter their deer before bringing it back and follow the law about importing carcasses.

It hasn't been shown to infect humans, so that's always a positive.
