Not too many miles north of the Utica/Rome area is the largest wind farm in New York State. Just off Route 177 in Lowville you'll see fields full of giant wind turbines.

They are located at Maple Ridge Wind Farm, and there are 195 turbines to be exact.

Each year, those turbines crank out enough electricity to power to about 140,000 homes.  The towers are 260 feet high, and when one of the blades is extended upwards, the total height is 320 feet.

Maple Ridge is currently the largest wind farm east of the Mississippi. It has been in operation since 2006, and employs about 35 people. If you take the drive north, there is a visitor center devoted to the turbines on Eagle Factory Road, just off Route 177.
