The moves follows a mandate from the state education department in an effort “to end the use of Native American mascots as soon as practical."

A number of schools in Central New York will be changing their team names and mascots after Native American references were banned across the state.

Experts at ESPN recently voted on which college football team in each Power 5 conference they believed to have the best mascot. The beloved 'Otto the Orange' from Syracuse University made the list.

After a little more than a week and over 25,000 votes the people have spoken. It was a narrow race the entire time and even when 10 a.m. hit people were still voting. The love of these two school representatives is apparent, but unfortunately there can only be one winner. The mascot that has been named 'The Best Central New York High School Mascot' is

It has been two weeks since the journey began to find "Central New York's Best High School Mascot.'

After a long week of voting, the Old Forge Eskimos have taken home the honor of best Herkimer County Mascot. Beginning tomorrow, the Eskimos will take on the Camden Blue Devils of Oneida County in the vote of a lifetime. That vote is for the title 'Best Central New York High School Mascot.'

Well it's official. Oneida County has voted and the winner of "The Best High School Mascot in Oneida County" goes to Camden Central Schools. Their mascot is the Blue Devil and now they will go on to face the winner of Herkimer County's Best High School Mascot. Voting for that begins Monday, February 29th, 2016.
