The simple answer to the question, "What Do Crocheting, Climate Change and The Great Barrier Reef Have In Common" is the 2016 4-H Oneida County STEM challenge. Lynette Kay with Cornell Cooperative Extensions' 4-H Youth Development says it all started with a book written by Cornell Math Professor, Daina Taimina.

That thing little old ladies do with a ball of yarn and a single hook! Odds are you never realized that those warm afghans, hats, mittens and scarves that keep us all warm are a complex layer of mathematical principles and geometric shapes. Inspired by a book written by an adjunct math professor from Cornell, Crocheting Hyperbolic Planes, two sisters from Australia realized that the shapes resembled that of the threatened coral found along the great barrier reef. Thus began the world wide project to crochet a coral reef.

Oneida County 4-H Youth and Leaders are all challenged to learn to crochet their very own piece of a coral reef. These will then be combined into a single display for public viewing at the Oneida County Boonville Fair and in the 4-H Building at the NY State Fair.
