What Age Makes You A “Senior”

I was at Colozzi’s Gift Shop in North Utica the other day buying my wife a birthday card when I heard the clerk mention to someone it was “senior discount day”. I inquired as to what age qualified one as a senior and was told, “Sixty”. Sounding like Flo in the Progressive Insurance commercial I shouted “Discount” and walked out 15% to the good. But at what age are we really considered “seniors’. It depends.According to the AARP we are cordially invited to join that “seniors” group at 50. Denny’s Restaurant offers up seniors discounts to anyone over 55. Amtrak says 60 is the number for senior fares and American Airlines doesn’t start offering senior deals on some domestic flights until the age of 65. The IRS? Sixty-five is their number too.
We may say we are as old as we feel (some mornings for me the new 60 ain’t 50, it’s 90) but the world sees it differently.
