While scanning Facebook, we came across someone eagerly trying to find information out about this animal found in a backyard. Do you know what this is?

Paula posted the photo explaining that this little animal was found in her mothers backyard in Rome New York. She explained it resembles a kangaroo rat, it hops and jumps like a kangaroo. What in the world do you think it is?

Many have commented on the photo explaining it looks like a "hairless squirrel". These animals are actually quite common in our area, and tend to have a bad reputation. However, Purdue explains, you have nothing to worry about if you spot one:

People can be taken aback by the sight of squirrels missing hair. In most situations, hair loss does not impact populations of squirrels. However, individuals may be impacted during winter. While mange is commonly presumed to be the culprit, most hair loss in squirrels is caused by a variety of superficial fungal diseases generally termed dermatophytoses. Hair from squirrels infected with fungal agents is typically broken off at the skin, leaving a fine stubble of short hairs. Damp weather is thought to play a role in some fungal outbreaks. Most animals will eventually gain an immune response and recover from the fungal infection without any apparent consequences."

If it isn't a hairless squirrel, what would you call this animal?
