Watch Out for Mosquitoes – New York Among the Worst

Two areas in our state made the list of the "Top 50 Mosquito Cities" and they're definitely areas you'll want to be extra careful in this spring and summer.

When most people think of mosquito-infested areas, they think of warmer, humid areas like down south... Not New York. But some areas in New York are pretty bad when it comes to these little buggers.

According to Yahoo Finance, Orkin has released their list of the "Top 50 Mosquito Cities," and New York is on the list... Twice.

First, let's take a look at the area closest to us, which happened to be a little lower on the list (but still making the list is bad enough). Coming in at the #34 spot is the Albany, Schenectady, and Troy area.

The other area, you probably could have guessed, is New York City. And that area sits at the #4 spot. Although New York City isn't close to us (well, not as close as Albany), it's still a concern especially if you thought about heading down there for the day or for a weekend this summer.

So what does that mean for us?

Well, we could be in for lots of mosquitoes this spring and summer (seeing as the data was collected up until March 31st of this year). And because it's the beginning of May and the mosquitoes have already been out it could be an active season. Now, that's not a guarantee that there WILL be more of these pests, but it definitely is a possibility.

The best thing you can do is protect yourself, your yard, and your animals. Make sure you use mosquito spray (something good with DEET), and use it during daylight hours not just at dusk and night. Also make sure you don't have standing water outside of your house. If there's a bucket collecting rainwater, get rid of it.

Other than that, there's not a lot you can do. You can call a professional to spray outside your house, but there's still the chance of having mosquitoes. Just be careful and protect yourself, some mosquitoes can carry harmful diseases for both you and your pets.
