Central New York's Spring Turkey season is quickly approaching. The season opens May 1, with the annual Youth Hunt is the weekend of April 21 and 22. When you're in the field this year, the Department of Environmental Conservation is asking hunters to watch for another bird too.

The DEC's "Citizen Science" program asks hunters to assist with population counts and habits of other birds animals when they're in the woods. And with estimates of 90-thousand New York turkey hunters expected, who better to help with some information on Ruffed Grouse. Following a harsh-winter, an accurate spring count to compare with Fall of 2017 numbers is key to keep the Grouse population thriving.

You can share your observations online at the DEC's website, or download a form to mail to the DEC. Address it to: Drumming Survey, NYSDEC, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-4754
