Walking Through Time at the Cemetery

One of my favorite leisure time activities is walking through cemeteries. Many a time I have pulled off the road when I have spotted an old, sometimes forgotten, cemetery and walked among the headstones. By noting the names in a family plot– their birth and death dates– you can connect the dots and piece together a history. Sometimes the epitaphs are informative, sometimes amusing (like the one pictured here from the Key West cemetery) but always interesting. My favorite? While walking through a cemetery just outside Vernon Center I noticed a headstone with the following epitaph.
“She did her best”
I thought to myself, gosh, what more can you say about someone? The woman in question may not have been perfect but “she did her best” and someone wanted those who would come later to know. I recommend a walk through your local cemetery when the seasons turn when you can spend some time reading and learning about local history through the inscriptions on the headstones.
