The Utica Police Department (UPD) posted an entry on its Facebook page reporting the theft of a manhole cover and the attempted theft of a second. The UPD was alerted by the Utica Department of Public Works (DPW) of a manhole cover theft on Water Street in the city and an attempt by two men in a pickup truck to steal another on Erie Street. Why would anyone want to steal a manhole cover?

The answer is, simply, money. According to the Facebook post each manhole cover costs the city $400 to replace which means it would probably bring in a nice dollar as scrap metal should the thieves be able to find a buyer. The UPD is asking for the public's help so if you have any tips you can call 315-223-2510.
