A ruling by the U.S. Department of Education has caused the unexpected closing of ITT Tech Schools across the United States.

The Department of Education ruling stopped all federal student loans to students at the school's 130 campuses nationwide, including three New York State campuses in Albany, Getzville and Liverpool.

ITT Tech officials called the ruling 'unwarranted' and 'lawless,' as it puts more than 8,000 employees out of work and leaves approximately 40,000 students with no school to attend.

There's no word on why the ruling was handed down, and ITT Tech's website has a message posted at the top of the homepage that reads: "We are currently not enrolling new students."

ITT Tech has been in business for over 50 years.
