Trout Fishing Season Opens Sunday

If you've had cabin fever these past few months, waiting to get out in the wild with fishing pole in hand, this is your weekend. Trout fishing season opens tomorrow, April 1. My favorite opening day was April 1, 1969, when my buddy and I caught our limit by 12 noon.

"According to Frank Fleck, the DEC Region 6 Fish Manager, the mild winter and recent warm weather have provided fishermen with an excellent chance to open the season.

Generally, from April 1st until October 15th, anglers are allowed to catch five fish per day without size limits, but Fleck says there are some streams with special regulations. Those waters are listed in the back of the fisherman’s guidebook.

Fleck also suggests all fisherman older than 16 get a fishing license, in order to avoid a common offense and the fine that goes with it.

“A fishing license costs $29,” Fleck said. “It’s actually one of the most common offenses. Usually it’s up to the local judge to decide what the fine is going to be, but it’s usually $50 or maybe a little more.”

To meet anticipated demand, several area streams will be stocked this week, including the Mohawk River and Oneida Creek to prepare for opening day."
