Top Hoaxes and Legends Of Upstate New York

Here in New York, we are no stranger to paranormal legends. In Upstate, here's a few hoaxes and legends you may have not heard of before.

The Lake George Monster "Georgie"

The Lake George Monster was a hoax invented by painter Harry Watrous after a fishing bet with newspaper editor Colonel William d'Alton Mann in 1904. The monster was "sighted" at Hague Bay and after word had spread about the monster, Watrous began to move the monster around the lake for more publicity. The original monster is currently on display at the Hague Town Hall in Hague, New York.

The  Lake Champlain Monster "Champ"

Champ is the "lake monster" currently living in Lake Champlain. Over the years, there have been over 300 reported sightings of Champ, however there is zero scientific evidence of his existence. Both the Iroquois and the Abenaki Indians did speak of his existence.

The Cardiff Giant

The Cardiff Giant is one of the biggest hoaxes ever held in American history, and it took place in Upstate New York. The giant was created by a tobacconist named George Hull. Hull, an atheist, decided to create the giant after an argument about a bible verse stating that there were giants who once lived on Earth.  It was a 10-foot tall "petrified man" uncovered on October 16, 1869. It's currently still on display today.
