Today Is Mardi Gras
Today is Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday. This year’s Mardi Gras is rather early, and next year it’s rather late….March 4, 2014. New Orleans is the place known for Mardi Gras celebrations, and they’ve already started!

“Mardi Gras”, “Mardi Gras season”, and “Carnival season” refer to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. The day is sometimes referred to as Shrove Tuesday, from the word shrive, meaning “confess.”,

“Mardi Gras is music, parades, picnics, floats, excitement…and one big holiday in New Orleans! Everyone is wearing purple, green, and gold, and adorned with long beads caught from the beautiful floats. They sit on the ground throwing balls, playing music, having a picnic, and watching the crowds walk by between parades.
During Mardi Gras, all of the businesses and roads are practically shut down–people walk everywhere and meeting new friends. People are dressed in crazy costumes, kids are everywhere, and they love it!
