Over the past few days we've discussed gardening and how it's not quite time to work the soil.  The threat of frost still exists and dirt is too wet for tending.  Now is the time to prepare the plan for your plot.  The Master Gardeners at Cornell Cooperative Extension say the 1st step is determining the purpose of your garden.

Are you planting a vegetable garden or a flower-cutting garden? Do you want to attract birds? Are you “decorating” an outdoor living area? Are you gardening for the health benefits of being physically active outside?  Are you looking for an activity you can do with your children?

Once you've determined what you want to grow, the next step is finding the proper plants for Central New York.  Here are some places to discover what grows best in our area and the soil and sun requirements of those plants.

Here are a list of native plants for landscaping. grasses that are native to CNY and flowery items like shrubs and wildflowers. The sites all give detail son when to plant and when to expect blooms. Of course you can speak directly to one of the master gardeners by calling the hotline Wednesdays or Fridays between 9am and noon, 315-736-3394 or get more information at the garden page on CCE's website.

Another free pruning class will held this Saturday if your still cleaning up existing fruit tree and bushes from winter.   The class is at North Star Orchards 4741 RT. 233 in Westmoreland starting at 9:30
