The Environmental Working Group Action Fund is calling for a ban on asbestos in consumer products after it found traces of the carcinogen in children's crayons and toy crime lab kits.

Of the 28 boxes of crayons tested, four tested positively for asbestos. Several were marketed under the names of the popular characters Mickey Mouse, Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... The average child uses 730 crayons by age 10, according to a news release ...The crayons and toys that contained asbestos were made in China and imported in the U.S., according to the package labels... the contaminated crayons were purchased from February to May 2015 from PartyCity and Dollar Tree, in a suburban county near San Francisco. The crime scene toys were purchased through Amazon.com and ToysRUs.com.

Yes, we have Party City and Dollar Tree in our area, but the crayons and toys have not been tested here like in the county near San Francisco. You should read the labels when purchasing toys for children. In this instance everything was made and imported from China.

The report shows the brands the crayons are sold under and also the 'Crime scene fingerprint kits'. According to the report, there is no "safe" level of asbestos exposure.
