Mild Weather Brings on Spring Fever

If you slept in yesterday, woke up around noon and walked outside you might have thought you'd done a "Rip Van Winkle and slept until April. The unseasonably mild "January thaw" weather had people out washing their cars, walking and biking on local trails and cleaning up some winter yard debris. The question is, will it last?

Winter is officially here. The Winter Soltice took place today at 6:21 a.m.. According to "The Old Farmer's Almanac", this is the earliest that winter has arrived since 1896. It's also the shortest day of the year with only nine hours and four minutes of daylight. Last winter wasn't much of a winter, and we'll see what the 2012-13 winter season will bring.

Last years mild winter put a strain of merchants who service the needs of winter sports enthusiasts as well those who supply basic snow removal essentials such as shovels, roof rakes and heating supplies like wood and pellet stoves. Some business owners are beginning to worry about a repeat.

Miller's Mills Ice Harvest Cancelled [VIDEO]

This years mild winter has claimed another victim. According to a report from WKTV.com Miller's Mills Ice Harvest officials have cancelled the event for the 3rd time in 7 years due to poor ice conditions. Apparently there is some ice in the middle of the pond but not enough along the shoreline to provide safe conditions for spectators. The news isn't all bad however.
