It's a sign of the times. Dish Network, the parent company of Blockbuster, has announced it will be closing about 300 stores and eliminating some 3000 jobs. I remember when going to Blockbuster to rent videos and later DVD's meant hoping that your favorite would still be in stock and then waiting in long lines to check out. Things have changed.

With these bitterly cold temperatures seeming like they are staying forever, my mind can't help but wander to the joy and excitement of the summer season. And, in addition to being able to walk outside of your house without having to wear 35 different clothing layers, another great part about summer is swimming. But, what to do if you have a small space and want a swimming pool? Buy one of those inflatable, above-ground pools? Nope. Here's an amazing invention called the Hidden Water Pool. I don't know about you, but I love a good card trick. Well, I must say that any magic trick is pretty interesting. And, even after the trick is explained, if I try to do it, I can't figure it out. Have you ever heard of the term, "Capsule Hotel"? I know I didn't. But, the concept is pretty interesting. Pretty much, a capsule hotel is a hotel stripped down to basics. A place to put your shoes, shower and sleep. That's it. The one featured in this video is a 9-hour capsule hotel--1 hour to shower, 7 hours to sleep and 1 hour to rest. This capsule hotel is in Japan. Check out the video--it explains a lot more. Do you think something like this would work in America?

Turning a Kitchen Into a Musical Instrument [VIDEO]

So, if I said to you, "Turn your kitchen into a musical instrument," what would you do? My first thought would be to revert to my toddler years and hit a spoon against a frying pan to make a drum-like sound. But, not this guy in the video. He goes one step further than just hitting a spoon against a frying pan. He turns his whole kitchen into an instrument. He uses everything from a can of cooking spray to a whisk to make musical sounds. I should clarify that he actually turns his kitchen into one big synthesizer. Check it out.

I know it's happened to me plenty of times: you go to shake someone's hand, and something goes wrong. Either your hands don't meet in the right spot, causing one of you shake fingers instead of a hand. Or, when you go for a handshake, the other person throws out a fist for a fist bump and you don't have time to change your hand positioning. You both know it's awkward, but nobody says a word about it. Here's a funny video about "Handshake Awareness." After watching the video, I have been in the same awkward handshake scenario. According to her website, she is 73 years old and she lives in Singapore. She started learning to play the guitar when she was 60. (That's good to hear--there's still time for me!) Pretty impressive stuff. Can your grandmother play the guitar?

How do you make iced tea? Well, if you are like me, you just buy it pre-made, right? OK. So, if you absolutely have to make it, what do you do? Brew the tea and add ice. Pretty easy. Even with practice, I couldn't do this--that's for sure.

Acrobatic Dog Gets Toy Out of Tree [VIDEO]

Here's the scenario: you're playing fetch with your dog, and, you throw his toy a little too far and it gets stuck in a tree. What to do? If it were me, I would get a stick and try to hit the toy out of the tree. But, not the dog in this video. Instead of just leaving the toy in the tree, this dog jumps up the tree and grabs the toy. It's very impressive.

We've all had it happen--we are doing the polite thing by holding the door open for someone, but the person we are holding the door for seems to be taking a really, really long time getting to the door. It's that awkward holding-the-door-for-somebody-who-is-too-far-away situation. Here's a pretty funny video from an Australian comedy show called "The Micallef Program" describing this same situation. In the video, he talks about polite distances.
