After Ice Jam Flooding Clean Up In Progress In Sylvan Beach

It's nothing new but it's always a difficult time for those residents of Sylvan Beach who are affected by the flooding caused by ice jams on Oneida Lake and adjacent waterways. The jam at the intersection of Fish Creek and the Barge Canal broke yesterday but not before the rising waters wrecked havoc with some homeowners.

Sylvan and Verona Beach Both Closed

Oneida County Health Department officials have closed both Sylvan Beach and Verona Beach to swimmers following the discovery of a suspicious algae in the waters of Oneida Lake. According to a report from NewsChannel 2 WKTV inspectors from the Health Department were conducting a routine inspection when they discovered the blue-green algae which, they say, could be toxic and closed the beaches.

Last week I was out at Sylvan Beach and was astounded at the high water levels and rough conditions on Oneida Lake. My first thought was that they could hold some surfing championships out there. Now, according to YNN, it appears that the official word is out-no boating on Oneida Lake.
