May 30, 2012 It is pretty well known that both Polliwog and I enjoy playing golf. It is also pretty well known that neither one of us consider ourselves to be particularly athletic. A research organization called ProCon.org did a study to determine whether golf should be classified a "sport" or a "game". The results showed there were proponents and skeptics on both sides of the question.
February 22, 2012 The Utica College Pioneer hockey team opens up its post-season action tonight with an ECAC first round match up against Neumann College of Aston, PA. The two teams squared off three times during the regular season and, according to the Pioneers website, Neumann won two of the three with one game ending in a tie.
February 13, 2012 Jeremy Lin has created quite a buzz with his phenomenal play with the NBA's New York Knicks recently but yesterday he just played spectator at his younger brother Joseph's game at Hamilton College in Clinton. Joseph is a freshman guard with the Continentals and with big brother Jeremy watching he scored 4 points grabbed 2 rebounds and had 2 assists. According to the Utica Observer-Dispatch the night was truly a family affair.
February 10, 2012 The massive fire at the South Utica Sports Plex not only left the members of the Central New York Roller Derby League without a practice facility but destroyed thousands of dollars worth of their equipment. According to their website the league--which plays its home games at the RFK Rink in Rome--had just recently begun using the facility as a practice site and had stored much of it gear there.
November 3, 2011 First there was planking. Then came owling. Now, according to The Wall Street Journal, a new "posing" fad in sweeping the nation. It's called "Tebowing" in honor of its creator Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.
October 31, 2011 I have to admit I'm not big on "fantasy" movies. The one exception to my rule has always been "Field of Dreams", the Kevin Costner film about baseball, dreams realized and father-son relationships. That's why I was happy to hear that the Dyersville, Iowa baseball field that served as the backdrop in the movie would be kept, according to ESPN, as is. The property which also includes a 2-bedroom house, 6 outbuildings and 193 acres of mostly cornfields was recently sold for $5.4 million.
October 24, 2011 You would never know it living in the Mohawk Valley but according to Guyism.com the New York Yankees are the most hated team in sports. It was once said that rooting for the Yankees was like rooting for General Motors (how times have changed) because of their organizational efficiency. However that hasn't stopped generations of New Yorkers from cheering on the "Bronx Bombers" through good times and bad. What other teams are reviled?

August 9, 2011 Utica's mixed martial arts star Matt Hamill is retiring. According to the official UFC website Matt had a total of 13 MMA fights with a record of 11 wins and 2 losses. Matt posted the news of his retirement on his website saying that injuries were the motivating factor in his decision.
